From Mr. Klug:
Some "Good" News from IDPH
This past week the director of Illinois Department of Public Health along with the governor, announced that regions could move back into Phase 4 mitigation in some areas of the state. Region 3, which includes Springfield and Sangamon County, was one of the three regions to be able to move back to the way things were for half the summer and most of the fall. This is being done in concert with falling COVID 19 cases in the region, along with some other necessary criteria being met.
Then, on Friday, they announced that Regions in Phase 4 could also start playing sports that were previously prohibited. This includes volleyball and basketball. While this is exciting for many of our families and students, it is important to realize there has been little guidance as to what this means for us. IHSA is supposed to release some important info this week, and this should help direct any moves forward. It is likely that any chance of playing will come with some unique restrictions.
Once we are given direction, we will let all of our families know what is going to happen. This could also be good news for other types of activities of our students during the school day too. We will wait to hear what happens, and pray that God still continues to bless and keep us safe each day.

Announcements
School Closing Due to Weather
Please be aware that there is winter weather in the forecast a couple of times in the next two weeks, including Monday January 25 that is forecasting the potential for freezing rain. Freezing rain is a difficult one to deal with because it can cause a lot of problems quickly. So please be aware in the coming days and weeks.
With winter upon us, if school closes due to weather we will be using email, school app notifications, Facebook, and local media outlets to announce closing. Decisions for "Snow Day" closings are made as early as possible with the safety of our students and families as top priority.
Re-Enrollment for 2021-2022 Academic Year
Re-Enrollment paperwork went home on Friday January 8th with the youngest child in each family. Please take time to read the paperwork included. If you have any questions please contact Heather Daniel at admissions@trinity-lutheran.com or call us in the office. Please return by January 29th. We will open admissions up to the public on February 1.
Extended Care
In order to offer extended care services next Friday for grades Kindergarten-8th grade, when we dismiss at 1:00pm, we need to take reservations for that day to determine if we will be able to offer this. Please contact the school office or Mrs. Opperman at sopperman@trinity-lutheran.com . These reservations need to be made by Monday January 25.
Early Dismissal Days
When we were planning for a year around COVID-19 issues, we removed an integral part to our school year, our early 1:00pm dismissals. These are normally utilized for teacher professional development. We will be putting these back into the calendar for the second semester. A new school calendar will be sent home in the coming weeks, please be on the lookout. These dates will be: January 29, February 26, and April 30.
Cold Weather
Please have your child dress for the weather. They do spend more time outside this year than in previous years. We will be outside most days even in the winter to get fresh air. It is a good idea to have a stocking cap, gloves, and winter jacket.
Sycamore App
Did you know that there is an app in your providers store. This makes it much easier to check grades and other information like lunch balances.
Substitute Teachers
If you or know someone that might be interested in substitute teaching this school year, please contact the school office. Any candidate must have at least 60 hours of college credit.
Absences
If your child will be absent from school, you may contact the school via the app and the absence form, a phone call, or emailing the school office at school@trinity-lutheran.com
Uniform Dress Code
Please work to comply with the uniform dress code. Teachers may be contacting you if your child is out of dress code.
Wish List
Trinity teachers in preschool - eighth grade have been updating the wish list. Take a minute, look at the list, and see if you are able to help purchase something for the classroom!

Love & Logic at Home
Learning the ABCs for Training Kids to Do Chores
By Dr. Charles Fay
There are many new challenges facing parents during this school year and we believe that Love and Logic has time-tested solutions that can help them meet these challenges. Regardless of what might be going on in the world, parents often struggle with how to help their kids enjoy the best academic success with their schoolwork. One technique to meet this challenge might surprise some of you—ensure that our kids are contributing to the family by consistently helping with housework, yard work, and other duties.
Kids in the habit of successfully completing chores are far more likely to develop the habit of successfully completing academic assignments.
In one of my books, From Bad Grades to a Great Life, I describe how chores meet an essential human emotional need—the need to feel needed. When we treat our kids like guests in a five-star, all-inclusive resort, their true self-esteem plummets and they develop attitudes of entitlement. Low self-esteem and entitlement go hand in hand and together they equal low achievement motivation. To prevent this from happening, or to begin the process of healing if it has already happened, use Love and Logic’s ABCs for training kids to do chores:
A: Assign every member of your family some meaningful contributions.
Ask yourself, “What am I doing that my kids could do on a regular basis?” Many parents find it helpful to post a list on the refrigerator door, complete with names next to each contribution. Caution: Don’t say, “Do it now.” This will just create power struggles. Instead, allow them to have a deadline for each contribution.
B: Be quiet.
Avoid reminding or nagging. Remember that kids who have to be nagged into doing their chores will also need to be nagged into doing their schoolwork and homework.
C: Consequences preceded by sincere empathy will do the teaching.
When their children refuse to do their chores, forget to do them, or do them haphazardly, many parents find it helpful to complete the chore for their children and then expect them to repay the time and energy expended to accomplish those contributions.
Sometimes this means doing extra chores for the parent. Sometimes this means staying home or doing without some privilege so that the parent has time to rest and relax. Other times this means paying the parent or a professional to do the job. A memorable example involved a teen who had to pay a maid service to complete her housework contributions.
The key to success hinges on sincere empathy! Remember that anger and frustration create resentment, while sincere empathy creates responsibility.
